Follow Me: A Little Wonder on Your Big Island Vacation

He could have hurried ahead. He came back for his friend.

That small gesture is the heart of “Follow Me,” our newest animated short from Kona Vista Paradise. A visitor hears water somewhere beyond the leaves. A tiny green gecko offers an invitation. There is no speech, no itinerary and no explanation—just a look that seems to say, “Come on. I have something to show you.”

This is an original AI-animated story. Its jungle and waterfall oasis are imaginary, not a named attraction or a view from our rental.

The moment before the waterfall

Our little guide knows where he is going. His new friend does not. When the gecko slips behind a broad leaf, the visitor hesitates. Then that familiar face peeks back out. He is waiting.

The waterfall is the beautiful reveal, but that pause gives the journey its meaning. A good guide notices who is coming along. A memorable trip makes room for the person beside you. By the time the two friends share the view, the discovery belongs to both of them.

If you met our gecko in “Kona Had Other Plans: Leave Room for the Unexpected,” this is his next adventure. His personality is taking shape through the things he does: inviting, encouraging and remembering to look back.

The tiny green gecko and his visitor exchange an affectionate look in Follow Me, an original animated story.

Leave room for your own discovery

A Big Island vacation can easily become a race through saved places. Before you arrive, ask everyone travelling with you one question: what is the moment you most want from this trip? Perhaps it is a waterfall walk, a shared meal or simply enough time to watch the ocean without checking the clock.

Choose one main outing for a day and leave breathing room around it. Consider the driving, the walk itself and the energy of the people coming with you. A slower companion should not have to spend the whole day catching up. The film’s most useful travel lesson may be its simplest: look back.

For a real adventure, follow established visitor routes and the advice of the people who manage them. An experienced local guide can help you understand a place beyond its photograph. The gecko’s invitation is a story about curiosity and care, not an invitation to seek unmarked paths or enter private land.

Put the real island on your map

Kona is on the island’s west side; the Hilo and Hāmākua areas are on the east and northeast. If waterfalls are central to your plans, account for that geography rather than treating every outing as just around the corner. Our Kona vs Hilo guide can help you choose a base that fits the holiday you want.

For a real waterfall outing, ʻAkaka Falls State Park near Honomū offers a designated paved route with steps and waterfall viewpoints. It is a different place from our fictional oasis. Check the park’s official notices, access information and fees before travelling, and stay on the designated route.

An adventure, and somewhere to come home to

After an outing, there is pleasure in an uncomplicated evening: deciding what to eat, talking about the day and having room to relax together.

Kona Vista Paradise is a three-bedroom, two-bath vacation rental at Kona Plaza in downtown Kailua-Kona, with a private lanai and a full kitchen. Its downtown location puts restaurants and the waterfront within walking distance, making it a practical base for travellers who want time together as well as time exploring.
