Kona Had Other Plans: Leave Room for the Unexpected

He had a plan for everything. Where to go. What to see. How to fit it all in.
Then a tiny green gecko appeared on the table.
In our animated short, “Kona Had Other Plans,” a visitor arrives with an itinerary long enough to become its own attraction. His attention is fixed on the paper in front of him. The little gecko has noticed something else.
An original AI-animated fictional story from Kona Vista Paradise. The café, scenery and characters are illustrative; they do not depict our condo, its views or a particular real venue.
The best moment wasn’t on the list
The gecko doesn’t give a speech. It doesn’t need to. A look, a pause and a small shift of attention are enough.
The visitor looks up. The light has changed. There is an ocean, a sunset and a perfectly good chair. For once, nothing needs checking off.
He folds the itinerary.
That is the whole little adventure: someone who came to see everything finally stops long enough to notice where he is.
We made this film because that feeling is part of what we love about a Kona vacation. There are places you want to visit and experiences worth planning for. But the memory you bring home might also be a conversation that runs long, a quiet moment together or the evening you decide you are already exactly where you want to be.

A still from the film: the itinerary gets put away, and the evening gets a little more room.
Give your Kona itinerary a little breathing room
You don’t have to abandon planning to leave space for a good surprise. A useful starting point is to choose one main activity for a day, then keep part of the day open.
Protect the plans that matter. Keep booked tours, reservations and travel time on your calendar. Let the optional stops stay optional. If a day already feels full on paper, it will probably feel full when you are living it.
Give a pause its own place. A leisurely breakfast, an unhurried afternoon or a sunset without a second appointment can be a perfectly good part of the trip. Open time is still vacation time.
Let your group enjoy different rhythms. One person may want another outing while someone else is ready to relax. Agree on a shared meal or activity, then give each other room around it.
A home base for both kinds of days
Kona Vista Paradise is a three-bedroom, two-bath vacation rental at Kona Plaza in downtown Kailua-Kona. Its private lanai and location within walking distance of downtown restaurants and the waterfront give your group options for time together and time out exploring.
The animated café belongs to our story. You can see the actual property, photos and current booking information on our website.
If you would like a starting framework for the rest of the trip, our three-day Kona itinerary can help. Treat it as a starting point, then leave a few spaces that don’t need filling.
